PUBLIC or PRO SE:

Criminal: If unable to obtain a public defender or are seeking other representation, be aware that most attorneys charge up front for representation in criminal cases.

Civil: Not entitled to free representation. Parties must obtain their own representation.

The Illinois State Bar Association has posted information on legal resources for those with questions about hiring an attorney, fees, where to look for an attorney, and other very valuable hints on first meetings and client responsibilities.
